What you eat in the 24 hours before a significant event directly impacts your energy, recovery, and physical performance during it. 4–6 hours before: a substantial meal of lean protein (40–50g), complex carbohydrates (80–100g), and moderate fat. This builds glycogen stores for sustained energy and reduces catabolic pressure from prolonged physical activity.
Avoid high-fat, high-fibre meals in the 2 hours before. Digestive discomfort is a real issue in warm, physical environments. Pre-hydrate with electrolytes — sodium, potassium, magnesium — the afternoon before a late night.
Alcohol strategy: if alcohol is part of the evening, front-load it early in the night rather than throughout. This reduces the total volume consumed and allows more time for metabolism before sleep.
Dehydration is the primary cause of post-event fatigue, cognitive impairment, and physical performance degradation. In warm club environments with stimulant substances, it becomes a safety issue.
Target: 500–750ml of water or electrolyte drink per hour of active dancing. For events over 3 hours, use electrolyte solutions rather than plain water to prevent hyponatraemia (dangerously low sodium from excessive plain water intake).
Signs of dehydration: dark urine, headache, muscle cramps, dry mouth. Signs of overhydration: nausea, bloating, confusion despite drinking. The solution to both: electrolyte balance, not just volume.
The post-event recovery period is where intelligent management separates those who maintain their progress from those who feel wrecked for days. The 'write-off' approach — sleeping all day, eating junk, skipping everything — extends the recovery period unnecessarily.
Immediately on return (even if 4–5am): 40–50g of protein (shake or food), 400mg magnesium glycinate, electrolytes, and hydration. This sets the foundation for quality sleep and accelerated recovery.
Sleep: 9–10 hours in a blacked-out, cool room. Use earplugs and eye masks. Phone on silent. The sleep you get after accumulated sleep pressure is often unusually restorative in terms of deep sleep architecture.
Training around events should be planned, not improvised. In the 48 hours before a late event: complete any scheduled training and prioritise sleep. Don't force training the morning of a late night.
Post-event: rest for 24–48 hours before returning to training. When you return, reduce volume by 30–40% and keep intensity (load) the same. One modified training week per month is negligible to long-term progress and significantly reduces injury risk.
The goal is sustainable performance across months and years, not maximising every individual week. Elite athletes plan their social calendar the same way they plan their deload weeks — as part of the overall system, not exceptions to it.
